The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) also has a section of the Virunga Mountains Park called the Parc National des Virunga. The DRC gorilla population suffered a major setback because several gorillas were brutally hacked to death in 2007.
The killing of the mountain gorillas in DRC in mid-2007 and the reports of different rebel groups in the park reflects instability in the park. This part of eastern DRC (North Kivu Province) remains unstable and this is why Ultimate Safaris & Islands does not take clients to this area at present.
