This romantic archipelago of islands off Kenya is renowned for its laid back atmosphere, clear blue waters and pristine beaches. In 2001 it was designated a World Heritage Site.
Life on the famous Kenyan Swahili Island of Lamu has barely changed since it became a busy port in the 1500’s. There is only one car on the island(!), so donkeys and dhows dictate the pace of life. The romantic winding streets of Lamu Town are lined by intricately carved doorways and scented with spices and wafts of mouth-watering Swahili dishes. Lamu has many cultural sites to visit including ancient mosques, museums, a fort, and markets.
Just north of Lamu is Kiwayu Island.
