Largely untouched by tourism, Mozambique is Africa’s undiscovered jewel. Mozambique and its islands are a melting pot of cultures and exotic influences, from early North African and Arab traders to Portuguese colonists who have all left their mark. Mozambique offers pristine white beaches and fantastic marine life. The diving, snorkelling and fishing available are among the best in the world.
Northern Mozambique
Northern Mozambique is a remote and beautiful paradise that has only very recently opened up to tourism. There are 32 islands, the Querimba Archipelago, that stretch from the coastal town of Pemba almost 400 kilometres up to Mozambique's northern border with Tanzania.
This Archipelago has to be one of the last undiscovered jewels of Africa. It is scattered with innumerable castaway beaches and is home to a large assortment of wildlife both onshore and surrounding its pristine coral reefs, the diversity of this marine sanctuary is exemplary.
Southern Mozambique
Off the coast of Mozambique, just inside the Tropic of Cancer, lies the tropical paradise of the Bazaruto Archipelago. A mere 20 minute motor boat ride across the channel from the mainland town of Vilanculos are the five islands of the archipelago lying in the middle of a marine national park.
White pristine beaches are studded with palms surrounded by crystal clear waters which is said to have some of the best diving in the world. Immerse yourself in the archipelago’s colourful past and watch the local fishermen pole their beautiful dhows out to catch the wind. You may be lucky enough to swim with dolphins or even see one of the world's rarest mammals, the dugong (sea cow). All the hotels have a full range of water sports including snorkelling, diving, deep sea fishing, sailing and cruising. There is also excellent bird watching and day trips.
Mozambique is 1 hour ahead of GM time.
When to go
Mozambique’s tropical climate varies with altitude and latitude, the north east coastal regions generally being hotter and more humid than the south. The cooler dry season from April to September is considered the best time to visit when water visibility is good and the weather ideal.
