Zanzibar’s 236 Hurumzi Hotel (formerly Emerson & Green) in Stone Town is an eccentric place and will appeal to our more adventurous clients! It is the converted residence of Tharia Topan, one of the wealthiest merchants of the Swahili Empire. Entering through imposing studded doors you’ll find a boutique hotel full of antique Zanzibari chests, old paintings, rich rugs and steep wooden staircases. The whole hotel has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment.
At 236 Hurumzi there are seventeen rooms which deliberately have no phone, TV or fridge but with canopy beds, Persian baths and deep shuttered balconies. A new addition is the enormous Ball Room, with two vast double beds it is said to be the largest hotel room in Zanzibar! Rooms which are the old favourites at 236 Hurumzi are named after points of the compass. South is accessible over high wooden bridge, and provides a semi open-air bathroom with views over Stone Town, separated from bedroom by small private veranda. West also has a good view, and a kidney shaped bath for romantic soaks, while in East a lattice work wall provides an atmospheric dappled light and catches the breeze.
There is a renowned rooftop restaurant at 236 Hurumzi with incredible views over Stone Town’s mosques, minarets, Hindu temples and church spires to the ocean beyond. This is the perfect place to snuggle in cushions, Arab-style, while your meal is served on low tables overlooking the panorama of the Stone Town’s harbour beneath you.
Zanzibar airport is 4 miles from Stone Town.
