Ras Kutani

Classic Destination

Ras Kutani is set on four kilometres of deserted white sandy beach, washed by the gentle surf of the temperate Indian Ocean. There is a small lagoon where you will find kingfishers, darters and hear blue and colobus monkeys chattering in the trees. If you are looking for pure relaxation in a polished but unstuffy atmosphere, perhaps with some fishing, snorkelling, horse riding and walking mixed in, then Ras Kutani is as good as it gets. Due to the fact that it is located on the mainland this lodge offers considerably better value for money than any of the top end beach locations out on the islands.

Accommodation at Ras Kutani is in 12 spacious cottages constructed from local materials and open to sea breezes. Each cottage has its own large verandah with Swahili day beds and hammocks and all have great views of the ocean.

The dining area at Tanzania’s Ras Kutani has books, games, an awesome bar and a lovely dining terrace. Exotic menus are based on the abundantly available fish and crustacean and tropical fruit.

The gentle trade winds which cool Ras Kutani provide ideal conditions for those keen on sailing or windsurfing. Other activities at Ras Kutani include nature walks through the indigenous coastal forest or along the pristine shore and guided walks to local inland and fishing villages. In all honesty, because Ras Kutani is situated on the mainland it does not offer as good diving and snorkelling as the rest of Tanzania’s islands. But by way of compensation it’s a great beach for boogie-boarding!

The hotel is accessed from Dar es Salaam by road or it is 10 minutes by air. You are then transported by rowing boat across a lily covered lagoon to the lodge.
