The 59-year-old had been in hospital since being airlifted to Paris after he suffered a stroke on June 29 while visiting Egypt, his second stroke in two years.
Vice President Rupiah Banda addressed the nation on state television on Tuesday confirming the president's death. Zambia has announced seven days of mourning, but the Zambian National Tourist Board has said that businesses will be open as usual and tourists need not alter their plans for visiting the country.
