Abu Camp is situated in almost half a million acres of private reserve in the heart of the Okavango Delta, Botswana.
This Premier Camp in the Okavango Delta consists of six custom-built, stylishly furnished tents with beautiful en-suite facilities with a shower and copper bath. Each tent has its own tree-shaded deck overlooking the lagoon, which thrives with abundant bird and animal life. The dining / bar areas are on raised wooden decks that wind around African Ebony and Sycamore Fig trees. Sundowners around a traditional campfire are followed by five-star meals prepared by Abu Camp’s safari chefs. The lounge and dining tent has beautiful big sofas, with a breathtaking view over the lagoon and also features a well-stocked library and a study. There is a shaded pool area to relax in.
Guests at Abu Camp are invited to share with the resident elephant family what is, without doubt, the ultimate elephant education safari. The elephant experiences offer many magical moments including interacting with the resident herd of eight elephants by riding or walking with them, as well as with the herds of wildlife in the Okavango Delta area.
A healthy baby bull elephant named Abu was born to Sirheni just after 6h00 on 24th May 2006. Abu is named after the famous leader of the herd who died tragically four years ago and after whom Abu Camp is named after.
And at 3.30pm on 11th February 2008 Kitimetse had a baby which has been named Lorato, which means love in Setswana. Everyone who has met her has fallen in love with her! She weighed 70 kilograms and measured 90 centimetres at the shoulder. She was quickly feeding and sleeping and within a few days was joining the herd in their walks to their favourite mud bath.
Kitimetse, her proud mother, joined the Abu herd as a baby having been rescued from a mud bank in the Okavango after she had been attacked by a crocodile and apparently abandoned by her wild herd. Kitimetse - her name means ‘I am lost’ in Setswana – is thought to be about 12 years old and Lorato is her first-born.
Abu Camp also offers game drives, night drives, walks and mokoro (dugout canoe) safaris to view the abundance of game in the Okavango Delta.
The safari at Abu Camp is a fixed three night/four day itinerary departing on Tuesdays and Saturdays; with no guests arriving or departing outside these departure days this is without doubt the Ultimate ‘house party’ in the Okavango Delta.
