Elsa's Kopje Camp

Elsa’s Kopje is named after Elsa the lioness who was made famous by George and Joy Adamson’s biographical film "Born Free". Elsa’s Kopje is almost invisible to the eye as you approach its home on Mughwango Hill in Kenya’s Meru National Park. It blends into the rocky crags of the "Kopje" (small hill) and is built very near to the site where the Adamson’s raised Elsa.

Elsa’s Kopje’s eight rustic cottages with en-suite, elegantly appointed bathrooms are the ultimate rooms-with-a-view, uniquely designed and crafted, incorporating the natural features of the rocky hillside. There is an open bar, lounge and dining room with an exceptionally inviting infinity pool overlooking the Meru plains. The food is traditional Northern Italian cuisine blended with a selection of local and international dishes, fresh baked bread, crisp salads and locally grown vegetables.

On our most recent visit there were oodles of hyrax’s running around and sunning themselves everywhere. These cute well furred creatures are about the size of a Corgi and from a distance could be mistaken for a very well fed rabbit or guinea pig. They are unique and fascinating animals.

Elsa’s Private House is a spacious, stylish, exclusive hideaway set slightly apart from the main lodge. It has one double and one twin room both with en-suite bathrooms. There is a living and dining area, leading seamlessly outdoors into its own private swimming pool.

The area around Elsa’s is wonderful and wild. Activities at Elsa’s include safari game drives, night drives, guided bush walks, day excursions to the Tana River, visits to the Tharaka tribal village on the southern boundary of the Meru National Park, line fishing for catfish and barbel, bush meals, sundowners and massage.
