Joy’s Camp is situated in Kenya’s Shaba National Reserve and overlooks a large natural spring allowing continuous game viewing. It is home to resident buffalo, waterbuck and is a regular watering hole for the large number of elephant passing.
Joy’s Camp it built on the site of the Adamson’s tented home where Joy Adamson released her famous leopard "Penny". Their lioness, Elsa made famous by the Adamson’s biographical film "Born Free" was raised at a site in Meru National Park - see Elsa’s Kopje camp.
Joy’s camp is new and has only recently opened. There were originally cattle in the area and now they have been kept out the site is proving to be spectacular, the wildlife has increased tenfold, with the constant presence of oryx, zebra, Grevy’s zebra, waterbuck, buffalo, a resident lion pride and elephants. There are said to be only three sites with this much permanent game in Kenya - Tsavo West, Tsavo East and here.
The 10 luxury and spacious tents are set on raised platforms with breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. The interiors have an Islamic / Arabic influence as this area is traditionally Muslim. Each tent has a private veranda, ideal for private game viewing as well as relaxing, reading and soaking up the truly wild environs offered by Kenya’s Shaba. There is a pool at the camp, the cuisine is traditional Northern Italian. Joy’s Camp is the perfect choice for guests interested in a glimpse of Kenyan history, as well as those looking for an authentic wildlife safari combined with the comfort of a luxury-tented camp.
Activities include game safari drives, night drives, guided bush walks, visits to the Magado Crater, bush meals and sundowners.
