Kenya’s Shaba reserve is 300 kilometres from Nairobi and is a semi-desert with rugged hilly terrain and great rocky kopjes (small hills). The reserve protects arid thorn bush savannah, scrubland and scattered acacia; as well as rare wildlife adapted to this harsh environment such as reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich and Beisa Oryx. Shaba’s four natural springs attract a high concentration of wildlife. Shaba National Reserve was made famous for its association with the world famous conservationists Joy and George Adamson and the film "Born Free".
