One cannot be more awe-inspired by the contrasts and enormity of the African landscape than upon arrival at this award-winning, ecotourism lodge. Tortilis Camp is named after the flat-topped, umbrella thorn tree, the Acacia Tortilis, and is situated just outside the park in one of Amboseli's few remaining areas of unspoilt woodland, with the majestic backdrop of Africa's highest mountain, snow-capped Kilimanjaro.
The 17 tents are all large and spacious with elegant en suite bathrooms. There is a main lounge, bar and dining area, all exquisitely built with natural materials and thatched roofs, with a magnificent view of Kilimanjaro. The food is part of the charm, North Italian traditional recipes from the owner’s family cookbook, complimented by delicious salads and herbs. On a recent visit we unanimously decided that the food at Tortilis was the best we had ever had in any safari camp!
There is a lovely swimming pool with bar and chill out area in camp.
At Tortilis Camp in Amboseli clients enjoy wonderfully varied and excellent game viewing and can also spend time following the matriarchal elephant herds from the luxury of open sided safari Land Rovers or by walking with a trained Masai guide. Sundowners can be sipped on top of Kitirua hill as the sun sets colouring the snows of Kilimanjaro pink, bush breakfasts can be taken out on the plains, or one of the Masai manyattas (villages) can be visited to meet the Masai women and watch the Morans (young warriors) dance and experience their age-old existence.
