Lukula Selous Camp is located within a private photographic sanctuary of over 300,000 acres of the southern Selous Game Reserve. The reserve comprises diverse habitat from open flood plains interspersed with dense riparian forests that lie along the Lukula, Luwegu and Chi rivers to open savannah, which recedes to forested, rolling hills and steep ridges of exposed rock. A landscape seldom visited and unchanged by man, rich in wildlife and spectacular with nature where you will have a rare chance to watch the drama of the life cycle unfold in an atmosphere of utter privacy and freedom.
Lukula Selous Camp accommodates a maximum of eight guests in four luxurious and spacious tents situated along the banks of the Luwego River which are spread out under the large shady riverine forest characterized by fig and sausage trees. Each tent is authentic and stylish with beautifully worked pieces of campaign furniture, softened with carpets, cushions and colours brought inland from Zanzibar and afar. Ensuite facilities feature large open air bathrooms. A spacious comfortably appointed dining tent under shade provides an intimate and beautiful area to relax and dine. The "diwan" area stretching out onto the veranda is a haven to quietly reflect on the day's exploits, read a novel or simply absorb the sounds of Africa.
Lukula Selous offers an enhanced wilderness adventure. Instead of a set schedule of morning and afternoon game drives, focus is on a close connection with the landscape and its wildlife. This is possible in a vehicle or even a kayak, but the real experience of Lukula is on foot led by experienced porters, trackers and professional (and armed) guides. Following the paths of buffalo and elephant forms the foundation of the day and reveals other natural phenomena. Using traditional tracking techniques and temporary "grass hides", we can safely observe and photograph animals while leaving them undisturbed.
An open, fully equipped Land Cruiser allows for easy transport of guests and gear and the opportunity for night game drives. The Lukula, Luwegu and Chi rivers are navigable by canoe and inflatable kayaks. Guests can gently explore for just an afternoon in search of a quiet sundowner spot, or choose a two day expedition.
Sundowners are a spirited part of the Lukula Camp experience. Located on the sandy beaches of the river, away from camp, and under the broad African sky, this is an ideal way to soak up dusk's changing colours and the emerging activity of nightfall.
