Botswana and Benguerra Island

A sample itinerary for a 13 day journey taking in the Okavango Delta and Linyanti in Botswana, and Benguerra Lodge, in the Bazaruto Archipelago in Mozambique.

Days 1, 2 & 3

On arrival into Johannesburg airport from London Heathrow, you will transfer to your connecting flight with Air Botswana to Maun, Botswana. Here you will be met by your pilot who will take you through to the light aircraft with which he will fly you to Savuti Camp where you will be met by your safari guide and you will take a game drive to the camp. Savuti Camp is situated in a 275,000 acre private reserve in the Linyanti region which borders the Chobe National Park.

You will spend three nights at Savuti Camp, an intimate seven tented camp. Each of the spacious tents is on raised decks with en-suite bathrooms. The bar and dining areas are under thatch and there is a plunge pool. Everything overlooks the famous waterhole with woodpile hide to the side which is probably one of the best places in the world for up close and personal elephant viewing.

The Linyanti area is known for its large concentrations of predators, elephant and buffalo and most activities centre around both day and night drives in open four-wheel drive safari vehicles. Guided walks are also available as are sundowners and even brunch within the woodpile hide!

Days 4 & 5

After a good hearty brunch your guide will drive you to the airstrip to catch your light aircraft to Kwetsani Camp in the north-western reaches of the Okavango Delta. Botswana's Okavango Delta is one of the most incredible natural wonders of the world, you will be flying over 16,000 square kilometres of pristine wilderness, waterways and palm islands - your flight to Kwetsani Camp will be truly awe-inspiring! You will spend two nights here.

Kwetsani Camp is raised on stilts beneath a shady canopy. Five wonderful, spacious tree-house chalets are built under thatch roofs, with wood, glass and a little canvas. The camp overlooks an enormous floodplain of the Okavango which is dotted with lechwe and wildebeest. Guests can lie in their rooms, or in the pool, and watch the animals in front of the camp. All of Botswana's Okavango Delta large predators are found here.

Kwetsani Camp is a water camp and safari activities include mokoroing in dug-out canoes, fishing, walking on palm-fringed islands and game drives during the day and night. In the height of the Okavango's annual floods, boats are used to get around the area and also to transfer to the islands where the game viewing vehicles are located.

Days 6, 7 & 8

After your final activity at Kwetsani Camp, and having had brunch, your guide will transfer you to Kwetsani airstrip where you will board your light aircraft for your transfer to Chitabe Camp. Chitabe is on one of the most beautiful Islands in Botswana's Okavango Delta.

Chitabe's eight spacious East African-style tents are built on elevated wooden decks amongst the trees. Each tent has en-suite facilities and an indoor as well as an outdoor shower. The thatched dining area, bar and lounge are built on raised decks to provide superb views across the floodplain, and a pool allows guests to cool off in the heat of the day.

The variety of habitats at Chitabe creates an abundance of wildlife to be seen, including elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, reedbuck and impala. The elusive wild dog is also occasionally sighted. Chitabe also has two elevated hides located in the reserve, where guests can experience a "sleep out" under the stars of the Okavango Delta in full comfort and safety.

The main activities here are game drives both during the day and also at night, walks and in times of good floods, mokoro excursions as well.

Day 9

After your morning game drive you will return to camp for brunch. Your guide will then take you to the Chitabe Camp airstrip where you will board your light aircraft bound for Botswana's Maun. This transfer will connect with your Air Botswana flight to Johannesburg. On arrival you will make your way to the Intercontinental Hotel, located opposite the main terminal building at Johannesburg airport. Here you can relax, use all the facilities and enjoy the excellent cuisine.

Days 10, 11, 12 & 13

After a good early breakfast you will need to walk back to Johannesburg International Airport for your flight via Vilanculos to Benguerra Island in the Bazaruto archipelago of Mozambique.

The flight over the Bazaruto marine sanctuary is spectacular and gives you a taster of the clear azure waters of the Indian Ocean where you will spend the next four nights. Your destination is Benguerra Lodge on Benguerra Island. This is the ultimate romantic hideaway in southern Africa and is the quintessential barefoot luxury, beach lodge destination.

The 11 open fronted thatched chalets on raised stilts overlook the Indian Ocean and the food is very much fresh from the sea, often served delicately spiced.

Benguerra Island is only 10 kilometres long and is a mecca for scuba divers, Benguerra Lodge has their own well equipped dive centre.

Other activities include deep sea fishing, salt-water fly fishing, picnics on private sand islands, birding and sundowner cruises by traditional dhow.
