Tanzania and Pemba Island


A sample itinerary for a 12 day journey encompassing the Selous in Tanzania, and Fundu Lagoon, Pemba Island.

Days 1, 2, 3 & 4

After a night flight from London Heathrow into Dar Es Salaam International Airport, you will be transferred to your connecting flight to Sand Rivers.

Sand Rivers is set on a sweeping curve of the great Rufiji River, and is an idyllic place from which to explore the untamed Selous wilderness.

Eight spacious open-fronted cottages, built from stone and thatch, are raised on the banks of the Rufiji River, they are completely open fronted and offer amazing views.

Sand Rivers Selous offers walking safaris in the northern part of the Selous Game Reserve. It is the quality of its walking safaris that has earned Sand Rivers its reputation as one of the foremost lodges in Africa. The walking safaris explore the remotest corners of the northern Selous area over a set period, each camping spot is specially chosen for its view or the game in the area and allows you to completely absorb yourself in the Selous wilderness.

Days 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11

After breakfast you will be transferred back to Dar for your flight to Pemba Island; on arrival here you will be met by the Fundu Lagoon staff who will drive you the half hour transfer to Mkoani Port. Here awaits a speedboat to whisk you off for the 20 minute ride to the Fundu Lagoon.

Here you will spend the next 7 nights. Fundu Lagoon comprises 16 spacious canvas tents set on raised wooden decks and under thatch; each with a spectacular view of the Indian Ocean.

Sand walkways connect the rooms to the main building where the dining area has floating muslin, African art and a gleaming wooden bar.

The resort has its own PADI dive centre. Catamaran sailing charters are available as are traditional Dhow sailing trips, canoe trips to the mangroves and deep sea fishing trips. Other watersports include waterskiing and kayaking, there are also inter tidal nature walks a games room, and a massage and treatment room.

Day 12

This final morning you will be transferred via the speedboat to Zanzibar airport for your Kenya airways flight to Nairobi. Here you will connect with your British airways International flight back to London Heathrow.
